Policy Objectives : Reduction In Maternal Mortality

To reduce maternal mortality ratio from 707 in 1997 to 394 in 2010 and further to below 250 in 2016 with the following specific objectives:

  • Increase antenatal care (ANC) coverage from 46 percent in 1997 to 67 percent in 2006, to 78 percent in 2011 and to 90 percent in 2016
  • Increase TT coverage from 51 percent in 1998-99 to 80 percent in 2006, and to 90 percent in 2011
  • Increase deliveries attended by trained personnel from 22 percent in 1997 to 50 percent in 2006, to 65 percent in 2011 and to 80 percent in 2016
  • Increase institutional deliveries from 17 percent in 1997 to 35 percent in 2006, to 45 percent in 2011 and to 55 percent in 2016
  • Reduce mild and moderate anaemia among mothers from 47 percent in 1997 to 32 percent in 2006 to 23 percent in 2011 and to 15 percent in 2016
  • Eliminate severe anaemia among all women by 2011
  • Create a pregnancy-testing facility at each PHC and CHC by 2011
  • Strengthen the systems to identify pregnant mothers at risk and referral system to attend to high-risk cases
  • Introduce RTI and STI testing facilities and ensure availability of trained medical personnel to treat RTI and STI clients at all CHCs and PHCs by 2011
